Taking steps to prioritize our mental health is time to think of it like an asset that helps us thrive. There has been a decrease in taboo around mental health in recent years, mainly due to the Coronavirus pandemic. More and more people realize mental health matters, often due to their own struggles with mental health. As a result, we also understand the ripple effect that being in good mental health can have. The purpose of this article is to explain why mental health is so important and give you some easy strategies to keep it up. There is more to mental health than just an absence of mental disorders; it’s a part of holistic health and well-being that impacts every part of your life. Mental health is a state of mental wellbeing that lets people cope with lifes stresses, recognize their abilities, learn, work, and contribute to the community, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Basically, you want to thrive in different areas of life by achieving and maintaining a state of mental wellbeing. Mental health is impacted by genetics, psychology and biology, but it’s also affected by social, economic, environmental, and geopolitical factors. Our mental health continuum moves as our circumstances change throughout life, and we sometimes end up at risk of depression, anxiety, stress, burnout, personality disorders, PTSD, trauma, ADHD, OCD, narcissistic abuse, and phobias, depending on whats going on around us and how we feel.
Impact of Mental Health
Every aspect of your life is affected by your mental health, just like everything around you is. You can thrive in all areas of your life when you have good mental health, from family, relationships, work, personal interests, and everything in between, despite lifes stresses. But life is unpredictable and filled with a lot of challenges, so there are times when our mental health suffers. Stress, for instance, is one of the triggers for poor mental health, and ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) people are prone to mental health issues because theyre more likely to get stressed. Almost 70% of UHNW families said their family had addiction or mental health issues, according to a private survey we did among UHNW families. Additionally, most of these issues go untreated because mental health conditions have a stigma associated with them. It’s common for C-suite executives suffering from mental health problems to avoid seeking help for fear that their difficulties will leak and affect their companys stock price. We still need to destigmatize mental health and start thinking of it as an asset that helps us get the most out of life, so we have to keep working on it. Mental health can be hard to change because of genetics and biological and physiological factors, but there are always things you can do to make a difference.
Strategies for Maintaining Mental Well-Being and Preventing Mental Health Issues
It’s probably the smartest thing you can do to reduce risks, build resilience, and establish supportive environments for good mental health if you put time, effort, and energy into promoting and protecting your mental health. The following three tips will help you stay mentally healthy and prevent mental health issues, while improving your quality of life and wellbeing. You can keep your mental health healthy just as well as your body healthy. Getting active can help you deal with stress and lower your mental health, according to studies. Not only does moving your body release feel-good hormones that can lift your mood, but it also gives you a sense of accomplishment and makes you feel fun and social. Bonus points if you get outside, as this can boost your mental health. An adult should exercise 75 to 150 minutes a week, on average. You can exercise if you raise your heart rate, build heat in your body, and make your breath quick. You have to find something you enjoy, whether you’re walking part of your commute, taking a yoga class, swimming, or doing HIIT. Make sure you do something that works for you, and write it down in your diary so you do it. It’s easy to talk down when you’re struggling with mental health. Research shows, though, that practicing self-compassion can improve your mental health. According to Kristin Neff, PhD, a leading expert on self-compassion, people who are kinder to themselves feel less anxious, stressed, and depressed. Theyre also more likely to be happy and optimistic about the future.
